The other side of the hiring desk, pt 5 How often should job seekers follow up with recruiters -
The other side of the hiring desk, pt 5 How often should job seekers follow up with recruiters - So, youve read how NOT to follow up with a recruiter. But, what is the RIGHT amount of follow up? Here is another in my series of interviews conducted with my friend and colleague Stephanie A. Lloyd, a Talent Strategies Consultant and Owner of Calibre Search Group in Atlanta, Georgia. She is a National Careersà + Workplace Columnist for Examiner.com and also blogs at Radiant Veracity. You can also follow Stephanie on Twitter. How often should job seekers follow up with recruiters? As far as how and how often to follow upask the recruiter youre working with. I personally prefer a brief email once or twice a month. Remember, our job (and the way we get paid!) is to fill openings for our clients. If we have a job that you may be a fit for, well be on the phone with you immediately! During the interview process, how long it takes to get feedback or to move from one step to the next depends on the client and the situation. How urgent is the need? Who is an integral part of the process and is traveling/on vacation/otherwise unavailable? Unfortunately most interview processes do not move as quickly as anyone would like simply because there are so many people and variables involved. There is no need to call your recruiter daily when we have news, well call you! There is nothing we want more than to fill a position. We do what we can to keep the interview process moving forward, and at the same time we must walk a fine line as we do not want to irritate our clients. The candidates we enjoy working with the most understand and respect the process. Do you need help with your search? Follow this link to learn how I can help propel your job hunt! Ã

Job Search The Best Way to Explain the Gaps in Your Resume
Job Search The Best Way to Explain the Gaps in Your Resume The 2017 job market is shaping up to be the hottest in years, with employment on track to hit pre-recession levels by the spring, according to Brookings Institution projections. Thatâs good news for anyone planning to get back into the workforce after a career hiatus. While résumé gaps donât raise eyebrows the way they once did, returners still face an extra hurdle. Whether you took a break to raise a family, care for an elderly parent, or travel the globe, hereâs how to make the time off work in your favor. Get Up to Speed While you might be eager to jump back into your old life, take time first to investigate how things have changed in your absenceâ"and how youâve changed too. Do you want to return to your previous field? If so, immerse yourself in books, magazines, and industry reports to get an up-to-date view. Online courses from sites like Coursera.org and Udemy.com are a low-cost or free way to bolster your skills. Certifications are another good résumé booster. Look for ways to add value to your industry while youâre brushing up: Write articles, consult for small businesses, or pursue strategic volunteer opportunities, such as offering to mentor young people in the field. âThrow something on your plate that shows youâve been busy,â says Chicago-area career coach Lauren Milligan. Network Smarter Donât just tap former bosses and peers for opportunities. âLook to folks who were in junior positions at old jobs,â says Carol Fishman Cohen, CEO of iRelaunch, a resource for people reentering the workforce. Theyâve probably risen through the ranks and might be in a position to hire youâ"or refer you to someone who can. For returning employees, the best connections can often be found outside your professional circle, notes Lindsay Witcher of outplacement firm RiseSmart. If youâve been a stay-at-home mom, for example, tell your kidsâ school administrators that youâre looking for opportunities. The same goes for meet-ups, mommy-and-me classes, and other social groups. Craft Your Story Tim Tolan of executive search firm Sanford Rose Associates suggests creating a âtalk trackâ of clear success metrics from your past jobs. Include skills you picked up during the break. If you were helping a sick relative, maybe you created budgets and navigated the hospital system. Sprinkle those accomplishments into your story. Donât linger on the hiatus. Instead, focus on what you learned that can benefit the employer and why this particular job ignited your passion. âThat excitement will translate to the interview,â Milligan says. Explore a Trial Run Dozens of companies, including Ford, IBM, and Goldman Sachs, offer âreturnships,â which are designed for people reentering the workforce after an extended break. These internship-style programs often lead to something more permanent: Between 50% and 90% of participants convert to full-time jobs, Cohen says. (Also read: These 23 Companies Are Actively Recruiting New Parents.) Get More Resources These organizations and websites can help you ease the transition back to work. IRelaunch: Connects returning employees with temporary and full-time jobs. OnlineCertificatePrograms.org: Provides directories of programs by discipline and school. Ellevate Network: Promotes networking among professional women. Occupational Outlook Handbook: Lists the most in-demand job titles across a range of industries.

What To Say To Someone Who Doesnt Believe In Gender Pay Gap
What To Say To Someone Who Doesnt Believe In Gender Pay Gap Reports of thegender pay gemeinsame agrarpolitikare not new, and yet the existence ofthis inequalitycan be a truth thats hard to accept for men and women alike. If theres someone in your life who believes the gender pay gap is a myth, take the time to educate them before merely shutting them down. You can hear them out and then make your case using the facts weve rounded up below. Perhaps your denier doesnt believe in the gap because they feel women dont experiencediscrimination in the workplaceanymore. If there is adifference in pay, they say, its solely due to a difference in experience, education, credentials or other performance value. Alternatively, they might claim male and female employees starting at the same entry-level position make the same amount of money. They might also say the gender wage gap exists only because women often seekflexible jobsso they can balance childcare, and as such, they work fewer hours and make less pay (more on this bit later). What is the Equal Pay Act of 1963?The Equal Pay Act(EPA) is a law that protects against discrimination in the workplace by requiring that a man and woman employee be paid equal wages for doing equal work in the same establishment. What is the pay gap between genders? If the gender pay gap isnt in the areas above, then where is it? According toresearch discussed in The Washington Post, the statistic were most commonly shown that women make 79 cents on the dollar compared to men isnt entirely accurate. This figure derives from comparing all of female earnings with all of male earnings. It doesnt account for differences in age, education, years of experience, job title, state, or employer size, for example. Its true we dont seeas largeof a gender pay gap when we control for workers with specific job titles. Yet women totenstill lag behind their male coworkers by 7%, rather than 22%, after controlling for age, education, and years of experience, an d theres a 27% difference in total pay between men and women. This can be seen as progress, perhaps, as we want to be tightening the wage gap for similar positions and experience levels. But it doesnt prove that thereisnta wage gap (because spoiler there is), and it certainly doesnt explain the whole picture, especially when we look at income earners in higher levels of leadership and the earned income across a workers career. How much did a woman make to a mans dollar 2017?(Source geschftlicher umgang Insider)What is the gender income inequality in America? The gender wage gap starts to widen even more when we look at occupational segregation. Occupational segregation is seen in trends when people hold what were once considered stereotypically gendered jobs, like women being nurses and men being doctors. The previously male-dominated jobs continue to pay more, and the traditionally female-track jobs tend to pay less to this day. When you separate income data by occupation, the gender w age gap becomes even clearer. The biggest gender wage gaps, due to occupational segregation, are seen in jobs located in business, finance, law, and health-care occupations that are primarily self-employed, such as chiropractors. The smallest wage gaps are seen in technology and science industries, and health-care positions with a small degree of self-employment, like pharmacists. In addition to occupational segregation, we see a difference in female wages following the birth of a first child, often referred to as the mommy tax. Its argued that after the birth of a child, women seek outflexible positions, which tend to pay less than a job that requires a lot of in-person office hours. This temporal flexibility comes at a high cost. When women take on the role of primary caretaker and seek out a job with flexibility, they do earn less than counterparts who have the same level of education and experience but who are available for longer hours.(Source Business Insider)The bottom lineEve n though we know the gender pay gap is not a myth, this still leads to the question Is the gender pay gap really a gender caretaker gap? Part of the gender pay gap equation is the need for flexibility in caretaking roles. How can employers consciously close the gender wage gap, especially during the caretaking years of young children or aging parents? This is a topic for another discussion, but a valid question to raise. If you have gender pay gap deniers in your life and arent sure how to deal with them, now you have some data-driven ways you can educate them. And we can start by saying The gender pay gap is real, but it doesnt start where you think it does.--Jennifer Mayer supports parents through pregnancy, birth, new parenthood and the transition back to work.
